Parashurama

Karna was half brother to the Pandavas and son of Surya, but raised by a Suta charioteer. Karna came to Parashurama after being rejected by Drona because he imparted knowledge only to Kshatriyas, and Karna was, a son of Suta. Karna did not know of his true parentage and hence said he was a Brahmin, and so Parashurama accepted him as his student, giving him knowledge of the powerful Brahmastra weapon. Parashurama trained Karna to such a point that he declared Karna to be equal to himself in the art of warfare and archery.

One day, Parashurama was sleeping with his head resting on the lap of Karna and a scorpion crawled up the leg of the student and bit his thigh. In spite of the pain, Karna neither flinched nor cried so his guru could rest. Warm blood, however, trickled down his leg, waking Parashurama. Convinced that only a Kshatriya could have borne such pain in silence, Parashurama realized the lie of Karna, and cursed his student that his knowledge would fail him when it was most crucial. 

Upon Karna's pleading, Parshurama gifted him the 

1. celestial weapon called Bhargavastra, along with his 
2. personal bow called Vijaya, for being such a diligent student. ^[11]

Years later, during the Kurukshetra war, Karna had a dream in which he envisioned his guru and asked him to take back the curse he had given years back. Parashurama revealed that he had known all along Karna was a Kshatriya, but because he was a worthy student Parashurama had instructed him regardless. The avatar explained to Karna that the Brahmastra had to fail him when he needed it most. If he killed Arjuna, Duryodhana would be king instead of Yudhishthira, and chaos would ensue. Parashurama asked Karna to accept his curse and asked him to die at the hands of Arjuna,so that the world might live in peace.^[7] Karna accepted his gurus words and in return the grateful guru, Parashurama blessed Karna with 

1. immortal glory and 
2. everlasting fame.^[11] 

Later during the war, Karna died when shot fatally by Arjun for the sake of his guru's words.

Jarasandha

Jarasandha, the ruler of Magadha, having by conciliation and honours obtained Karna for a friend, had challenged all the Kshatriyas of the world, except the Kauravas and the Yadavas(8,8)

Hearing of the fame of Karna's might, the ruler of the Magadhas, king Jarasandha, challenged him to a single combat. Both conversant with the celestial weapons, a fierce battle took place between them in which they struck each other with diverse kinds of arms. At last when their arrows were exhausted and bows and swords were broken and they both became careless, they began, possessed of might as they were, to fight with bare arms. While engaged with him in mortal combat with bare arms, Karna was about to sever the two portions of his antagonist's body that had been united together by Jara. The king (of Magadha), then after feeling himself very much pained, cast off all desire of hostility and addressed Karna, saying, 'I am gratified.' From friendship he then gave unto Karna the town Malini. Before this, that tiger among men and subjugator of all foes (viz., Karna) had been king of the Angasonly, but from that time the grinder of hostile forces began to rule over Champa also, agreeably to the wishes of Duryodhana (12,5)

Karna's promise to anyone who will discover the location of Arjuna for him in Kurukshetra War:- I shall give a hundred female slaves, with golden collars, belonging to the country of the Magadhas, and of very youthful age. (8,38).

10. Fate may prove auspicious to that party which excels the other. No wise measures have been adopted by the Pandavas with the aid of superior intelligence. Nor, O hero, do we see, O perpetuator of Kuru's race, that thou hast done anything unwise from want of intelligence! It is Fate that decides the result of acts, wise or unwise; 
11. Fate, ever intent on its own purposes is awake when all else sleeps. Vast was thy host, and thy warriors are many. Even thus the battle began. With their small force, much greater and consisting of men capable of smiting effectually, hath been much reduced. 
12. I fear, it is the work of Fate, that has frustrated our exertions.

In the beginning of the Mahabharat war, we see that Arjuna became depressed and dejected seeing his own kinsmen in the opposite side. Therein we find that Lord Krishna encourages Arjuna by again and again telling Arjuna, "Stand up and fight! O Bharatha!" These words of encouragement are a source of great strength. On the other hand we see that Karna had Shalya as his charioteer and he was always discouraging Karna. King Shalya was the brother of Madri (mother of Nakula and Sahadeva), as well as the ruler of Madra-desa or the kingdom of Madra. The Pandavas had counted on Shalya joining their side with his huge army. On the way to assist the Pandavas in the Kurukshetra war, Shalya was tricked by Duryodhana, who arranged a huge feast for Shalya and his men. When Shalya was impressed by the hospitality of his host, whom he mistakenly thought to be Yudhisthira, he offered to be at his host's service. Unable to turn down Duryodhana's request to join the Kauravas, Shalya met Yudhisthira and apologized for his mistake. Yudhishtira, knowing that Shalya was a great charioteer and forecasting that Shalya would someday be asked to be the charioteer of Karna, extracted a vow from Shalya to the effect that Shalya will demoralise Karna and dampen his spirits. Shalya assured the Pandavas that he would do the needful.  

So during the war, when he was serving Karna he told, "Do you  seriously you think you can bring down Arjuna.....A rabbit can never bring down an elephant!" At the end, Karna pulled out his Nagastra and aimed it straight at Arjuna's head  and was about to fire it, when he was interrupted by Shalya. 'Karna! Do not aim for the head....Aim for the chest!' Shalya shouted. Even though Shalya was giving proper advise at this point, since he had continuously demoralized and discouraged Karna, Karna was in no mood to heed Shalya's warning. Shalya left Karna in the lurch since Karna did not heed his advice. Karna probably thought that Shalya was still trying to distract him by degrading him and fired the nagastra straight at Arjuna's head. Arjuna was not quick enough and could not defend against it. Krishna saw the astra coming as if in slow motion and right at the last minute when the weapon was almost among them, he pushed the chariot down and so....the weapon which came for the head went with the crown. 'Use the weapon again!' A voice came to Karna. Karna saw astonished as the astra looked at him in the shape of a snake. 'This Arjuna has killed my family in the Khandava forest...Use me again and this time I shall kill Arjuna!' Karna looked angrily at the astra. He said 'The only person I trust is myself....I do not trust anyone else to fight for me! Go away!'

Thus continuous discouragement made him lose trust on everyone. That is why we see that the children who are always discouraged in their young age, grow up to be highly negative personalities with no love and trust on anybody.

Adhiratha's son (Karna), loudly assuring the troops with the words 'Do not fear' proceeded to face Arjuna. Then (Karna)

invoked into existence the Agneya weapon. And similarly, Adhiratha's son also baffled the shafts of Arjuna of supreme energy. Resisting Arjuna's weapons thus by his own, Karna uttered loud shouts and shot many shafts at his antagonist.

3. the mighty car-warrior Satyaki, all approached Karna, and each of them pierced in with three straight shafts.  

The son of Radha, however, checking Arjuna's weapons by his own arrowy showers, cut off with three sharp shafts the bows of those three warriors. Their bows cut off, they looked like snakes without poison.

Karna says to Krishna ''And now about Duryodhana. We are two bodies but one soul. When the whole world was mocking me as lowborn, he honored me. I went to him as a nobody, but he bestowed a kingdom on me. He has given boundless friendship. How can I repay his debt?

In declaring war on the Pandavas he has mainly relied on me. Shall I join the Pandavas and betray him? No, Krishna. Duryodhana is the master who gave me succour. He is my master, my all. I will stand by him and fight the Pandavas.

If I win I shall have the satisfaction of having done my master's work; if I die I shall have glory. So I am resolved. Now let us part. A cut and right response came from karna when krishna suggested him to cross over pandava side.

On hearing Karna, Krishna was inwardly full of admiration.

"Bravo Karna! You are the very embodiment of loyalty to the master" thought he.

One Oppurtunity to Kill

"Vasudeva said, Great is the joy I feel. Listen to me, Dhananjaya! This that I will tell thee will immediately dispel thy sorrow and infuse delight into thy heart.

O thou of great splendour, know, O Dhananjaya,

that Karna, his dart being baffled through Ghatotkacha, is already slain in battle. The man does not exist in this world that could not stay before Karna armed with that dart and looking like Kartikeya in battle.

1. By good luck, his (natural) armour had been taken away. 
2. By good luck, his earrings also had been taken away. 
3. By good luck, his infallible dart also is now baffled, through Ghatotkacha.

For thy good, Karna was divested of his ear-rings by Sakra with the help of an illusion. Similarly was that subjugator of hostile towns deprived of his (natural) armour.  Karna now seems to me to be like an angry snake of virulent poison stupefied by power of incantation, or like a fire of mild flames. From that time, O mighty-armed one, when the high-souled Sakra gave that dart unto Karna in exchange for the latter's ear-rings, and celestial armour, that dart, viz., which has slain Ghatotkacha, from that time, Vrisha, having obtained it, had always regarded thee as slain in battle!

But though deprived of that dart,

Heroic in battle, possessed of mighty arms and with bow always uplifted, like the lion in the forest depriving leaders of elephantine herds of their pride, Karna always deprives the greatest car-warriors of their pride on the field of battle, and resembles the mid-day sun at whom none can gaze. Contending with all the illustrious and foremost of warriors of thy army, O tiger among men, Karna, while shooting his arrowy showers, looked like the autumnal sun with his thousand rays. Indeed, incessantly shooting showers of shafts like the clouds pouring torrents of rain at the end of summer, Karna is like a pouring cloud charged with celestial weapons. He is incapable of being vanquished in battle by the gods, he would mangle them in such a way that their flesh and blood would fall copiously on the field. Deprived, however, of his armour as also of his car-rings, O son of Pandu, and divested also of the dart given him by Vasava, Karna is now like a man (and no longer like a god).

There win occur one opportunity for his slaughter. When his car-wheels will sink in the earth, availing thyself of that opportunity, thou shouldst slay him in that distressful situation. I will make thee a sign beforehand.

Warned by it, thou shouldst act. The vanquisher of Vala himself, that foremost of heroes, wielding his thunder, is incapable of slaying the invincible Karna while the latter stands weapon in hand.

Arjuna protected by that Keshava of great energy, who is Narayana himself and who is without a rival, that high-souled Vasudeva, that ever-victorious Vishnu armed with conch, discus, and mace, whose attributes all the world united together, cannot (in narrating) exhaust in 10,000 years.
